July 16, 1994: A Mac Does DOS

by Chris Seibold Jul 16, 2011

A Macintosh booting into Windows seems passe since the release of Boot Camp. Perhaps surprisingly, Boot Camp it isn't the first dual boot solution Apple offered. That honor goes to the LC 630 DOS caompatible.

The Mac side of the machine was powered by a 33MHz 68LC040 and ran the usual Mac operating system (7.1) and featured all the ports you'd expect on a Mac. the DOS side of the machine was powered by a 66 MHz 486DX2. Much of componentry was shared but the DOS card did add one additional port to accommodate a DOS compatible joystick.

Apple's first foray into the world of dual booting was released mid July in 1994.

  • My first Mac. Happy birthday, old guy. Maybe I’ll take you out today and boot up OS 8.1 and Windows 98, just for fun.
